Robert Llewellyn: The Numpty Factor

"Over the last week I have noticed a marked and almost unconscious shift in my car journeys. Up to about 3 weeks ago, a journey I did last week-230 miles in one afternoon- I would not have considered attempting in the Nissan LEAF. I would just have gone in the Prius and not given it another thought.
However, after attending the opening of the first of many rapid chargers being installed at motorway services, I see the whole picture is quickly changing.

Not alone

The other day I turned up at the rapid charger on the M40 junction 8 services and there was a car parked in the charging bay. That’s very often the case, it’s often a black BMW with a very aggressive looking man sitting in the driver’s seat, engine running.
However this time it was a Nissan Leaf, I got to a charging point and an actual electric car was actually charging there. This is a first time for me.

The owner was a lovely chap, his car was fully charged, I plugged mine in, we had a chat and a coffee and off we went. I was there maybe 20 minutes.
Late at night when I was returning home, I went to the same rapid charger, no one around, I plug in, go into the deserted restaurant area, buy a fruit juice, go back to the car and drive off. It was charging for 11 minutes, it tells you on the screen. The battery was at 81 per cent, which is more than enough to get me home.

Charging circles

I drive off, in a patch of thick fog I take a wrong turn and instead of heading West toward home, I head East toward London. Doh!
Some very foul language was expressed at volume as I realised what a total pillock I’d been. I’d used this service area hundreds of times, I knew the in and out roads in my sleep. How could I have taken the wrong turn? But I did. I will now admit I know how fast a Nissan Leaf can travel on a near empty stretch of the UK motorway network at near midnight. Yes, there was patchy fog but not on the stretch of motorway I used, I had to drive 12 miles the wrong way, turn around at the next junction and drive back.

Free range motoring

I also want to point out that presently, that 230 mile journey cost me about £1.20. That’s what charging the Leaf cost me during an overnight charge, all the other top up charging I used was free. 230 miles in a Range Rover, okay, silly, but well over £100. In a sensible fossil burning car driven at or below the speed limit the fuel costs would between £25 and £30.
Today I am pushing the envelope a little bit further. I’m driving from Gloucestershire to London, then to Guildford, then back to London and then back to Gloucestershire. According to Google maps that a total distance of 268 miles.
That’s nothing, is it? In some petrol cars that’s half a tank. In an electric car it’s still a challenge, requires a bit of planning but it is perfectly possible, and thanks to the growing rapid charger network, getting easier all the time."
